Description

Icon (Itraconazole) is a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal medication used to treat a wide range of systemic and superficial fungal infections including aspergillosis, candidiasis, histoplasmosis, onychomycosis (nail fungus), tinea infections, and cryptococcal meningitis. It works by inhibiting the fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase, thereby blocking the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane, leading to disruption of membrane integrity and fungal cell death. Available in capsule and oral solution forms, it offers excellent tissue penetration and a broad spectrum of antifungal activity, making it effective against both superficial and deep-seated fungal infections. Due to its potential drug interactions through the cytochrome P450 enzyme system and possible hepatotoxicity, careful monitoring of liver function and review of concurrent medications are recommended during prolonged therapy.
