Description
Hydralazine HCl Injection USP is a direct-acting peripheral vasodilator administered parenterally for the emergency management of severe hypertension and hypertensive crises, including hypertension associated with pregnancy (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia). It works by directly relaxing the smooth muscle of arteriolar walls, causing vasodilation and a consequent reduction in peripheral vascular resistance, leading to a rapid decrease in blood pressure. Administered intravenously or intramuscularly, it produces a prompt antihypertensive effect, making it particularly valuable in acute clinical settings where rapid blood pressure control is essential. Due to its reflex tachycardia and fluid retention side effects, it is often used in combination with beta-blockers and diuretics to counteract these compensatory responses and achieve optimal blood pressure management.
