Description
Epan (Cefixime) is a third-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic that exerts bactericidal activity by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). It has broad-spectrum gram-negative coverage including E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Haemophilus influenzae, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, with moderate gram-positive activity, and is stable against many beta-lactamases. It is indicated for urinary tract infections, upper and lower respiratory tract infections, otitis media, typhoid fever, and uncomplicated gonorrhea, and is favored for its convenient once-daily oral dosing and good tissue penetration. It is generally well tolerated, with GI disturbances such as diarrhea and nausea being the most common side effects, and should be used cautiously in patients with penicillin hypersensitivity due to potential cross-reactivity.
