Entamizole DS (Diloxanide Furoate/ Metronidazole)

Description

Entamizole DS (Diloxanide Furoate 500mg + Metronidazole 400mg) is a fixed-dose combination antiamoebic preparation targeting both intestinal and extraintestinal amoebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole that acts against invasive trophozoites in tissue and systemic sites such as the liver, while diloxanide furoate acts as a luminal amoebicide, eradicating the cyst forms residing in the intestinal lumen that metronidazole alone cannot adequately eliminate. This complementary dual action makes the combination particularly effective for treating amoebic dysentery, amoebic liver abscess, and asymptomatic cyst carriers, reducing the risk of relapse and transmission. Common side effects include nausea, metallic taste, flatulence, and mild GI upset, with alcohol strictly contraindicated during metronidazole therapy due to a disulfiram-like reaction.
