Description

Xarelto 10mg contains Rivaroxaban 10mg, a direct oral Factor Xa inhibitor specifically indicated at this strength for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) following elective hip or knee replacement surgery, and also for the extended secondary prevention of recurrent DVT and PE at a reduced maintenance dose following completion of initial anticoagulation therapy, offering a targeted lower-dose option where full therapeutic anticoagulation is not required but continued thromboprotection remains necessary. At the 10mg dose, Rivaroxaban selectively inhibits Factor Xa in both free form and within the prothrombinase complex, effectively reducing thrombin generation and fibrin clot formation with a predictable pharmacokinetic profile, good oral bioavailability, and no requirement for routine INR monitoring or dietary restrictions that are typically associated with Vitamin K antagonists like Warfarin. For post-orthopedic surgery VTE prophylaxis, the recommended regimen is 10mg once daily, initiated 6–10 hours after surgery once hemostasis is established, continued for 5 weeks following hip replacement and 2 weeks following knee replacement, making it one of the most convenient and patient-friendly thromboprophylaxis options available in surgical settings. The 10mg strength is generally well tolerated; however, caution is required in patients with renal impairment (CrCl <15 mL/min), active bleeding, hepatic disease, and it remains contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation, with wound-related bleeding complications, anemia, and nausea being among the most commonly reported adverse effects in the post-surgical setting.
