Description
Vermox contains Mebendazole, a broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic agent used for the treatment of various intestinal worm infestations, working by selectively and irreversibly binding to the beta-tubulin subunits of parasitic worms, thereby inhibiting the polymerization of tubulin into microtubules, which disrupts glucose uptake, depletes glycogen stores, and impairs ATP production in the parasites, ultimately leading to their immobilization and death. It is effective against a wide range of intestinal nematodes including Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm/threadworm), Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus (hookworms), and also shows activity against Strongyloides stercoralis and Taenia species (tapeworms), making it one of the most versatile anthelmintics available. For pinworm infections, a single dose of 100mg is recommended, repeated after 2 weeks; for other worm infestations, the standard dose is 100mg twice daily for 3 consecutive days, with the tablet being chewed, swallowed, or crushed and mixed with food for ease of administration. Vermox is generally very well tolerated due to its minimal systemic absorption; however, transient abdominal pain, diarrhea, and flatulence may occur, and it is contraindicated in pregnancy (particularly the first trimester) due to its teratogenic potential observed in animal studies, and should be used with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
