Norvasc (Amlodipine Besylate)

Description

Norvasc is a long-acting dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that inhibits the transmembrane influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle, available as oral tablets in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg strengths. It lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as hard, and controls chest pain by increasing the supply of blood to the heart — though it does not stop angina once an attack has already begun. Norvasc is indicated for the treatment of hypertension and coronary artery disease, with lowering of blood pressure shown to reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as strokes and myocardial infarctions
