Description
Maxolon (Metoclopramide HCl) is a prokinetic and antiemetic medication widely used for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, postoperative recovery, and gastrointestinal disorders. It works by blocking dopamine D2 receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) of the brain, suppressing the vomiting reflex, while also enhancing gastrointestinal motility by sensitizing tissues to acetylcholine, accelerating gastric emptying and intestinal transit without stimulating secretions. Commonly prescribed for conditions such as gastroparesis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), diabetic gastric stasis, and nausea associated with migraine, it is available in tablet, syrup, and injectable formulations for flexible use across various clinical settings. Due to its dopamine antagonist properties, prolonged use may cause extrapyramidal side effects such as tardive dyskinesia, particularly in elderly patients and children, necessitating careful dose management and limiting therapy to the shortest effective duration under medical supervision.
