Description
Fasigyn (Tinidazole 500mg) is a second-generation nitroimidazole antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent with a broader spectrum and longer half-life than metronidazole, allowing for shorter treatment courses and once-daily dosing. It exerts its action by entering susceptible organisms and undergoing reductive activation to form cytotoxic free radicals that damage DNA, leading to cell death in anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. It is indicated for the treatment of trichomoniasis, giardiasis, intestinal and extraintestinal amoebiasis (including amoebic liver abscess), bacterial vaginosis, and infections caused by anaerobic bacteria such as Bacteroides and Clostridium species. It is generally well tolerated with metallic taste, nausea, and GI discomfort being the most common side effects, and alcohol must be strictly avoided during and for 72 hours after therapy due to a disulfiram-like reaction.
