Description

Erythrocin (Erythromycin Stearate) is a macrolide antibiotic that exerts its bacteriostatic (and at high doses, bactericidal) effect by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It has good gram-positive coverage against Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and Corynebacterium species, as well as activity against atypical organisms such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia, Legionella, and Bordetella pertussis, making it a useful penicillin alternative in allergic patients. It is indicated for respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, whooping cough, chlamydial infections, and atypical pneumonia, and is one of the few antibiotics considered safe in pregnancy. Common side effects include GI upset, nausea, and abdominal cramping, and it is a known inhibitor of CYP3A4 with significant drug interaction potential, requiring caution when co-administered with statins, warfarin, and other hepatically metabolized medications.
