Description
Glucovance (Metformin + Glibenclamide) is a fixed-dose combination oral antidiabetic medication used to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus who require dual therapy. Metformin reduces hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity, while Glibenclamide (Glyburide), a sulfonylurea, stimulates pancreatic beta cells to secrete more insulin, providing complementary and synergistic blood sugar lowering effects. This dual mechanism allows for better glycemic control at lower individual doses of each component, reducing the risk of side effects associated with higher doses of either drug alone. It is typically prescribed when diet, exercise, and single-agent therapy fail to achieve adequate blood glucose control, though caution is advised due to the risk of hypoglycemia associated with the sulfonylurea component.
