Description

Duphalac Syrup (Lactulose) is an osmotic laxative and ammonia-lowering agent consisting of a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed in the small intestine. It passes intact to the colon where it is fermented by colonic bacteria into short-chain organic acids, which lower colonic pH, drawing water into the bowel lumen and stimulating peristalsis for the treatment of chronic constipation. At higher doses, it is also indicated for hepatic encephalopathy, where the acidic colonic environment converts ammonia (NH₃) to ammonium (NH₄⁺), trapping it in the colon and reducing systemic ammonia absorption. It is generally safe for long-term use, including in pregnant women and elderly patients, with flatulence, bloating, and abdominal cramps being the most common side effects.
