Description
Zyrtec contains Cetirizine Dihydrochloride, a potent second-generation antihistamine and selective peripheral H₁ receptor antagonist that works by competitively blocking histamine H₁ receptors in the peripheral tissues, thereby preventing histamine-mediated allergic responses including vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, bronchoconstriction, pruritus, and mucus secretion, while its minimal penetration across the blood-brain barrier due to its zwitterionic nature at physiological pH significantly reduces the central nervous system sedation and anticholinergic side effects characteristic of first-generation antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine and diphenhydramine. Unlike first-generation antihistamines, Cetirizine also demonstrates additional anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties beyond simple H₁ blockade, including inhibition of eosinophil migration, reduction of adhesion molecule expression, and suppression of mast cell mediator release, contributing to its superior and more comprehensive management of allergic conditions with a rapid onset of action within 1 hour and prolonged duration of effect lasting 24 hours, supporting convenient once-daily dosing. It is indicated for the symptomatic relief of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (hay fever), allergic conjunctivitis, chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives), angioedema, pruritus associated with atopic dermatitis, and other IgE-mediated allergic conditions in adults and children, available in 5mg and 10mg tablet strengths with the standard adult dose being 10mg once daily or 5mg twice daily as needed. Zyrtec is generally very well tolerated with an excellent safety profile; however, mild drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, and headache may occasionally occur particularly at higher doses, and while significantly less sedating than first-generation antihistamines, patients should exercise caution when driving or operating machinery, especially when initiating therapy, as individual sensitivity to its mild CNS effects may vary.
