Vicks VapoRub (VAPORIZING OINTMENT)

Description

Vicks VapoRub is a widely recognized mentholated topical vaporizing ointment containing three active ingredients — Camphor 4.8% (a cough suppressant and topical analgesic), Eucalyptus Oil 1.2% (a cough suppressant), and Menthol 2.6% (a nasal decongestant and cough suppressant) — in a petrolatum base, working together to provide temporary relief from cough, nasal congestion, and minor muscle aches through both topical and inhalation effects. When applied to the chest, throat, or back, the volatile aromatic compounds are released as warming vapors that are inhaled, stimulating cold receptors in the nasal passages to create a sensation of improved airflow and reduced congestion, while simultaneously suppressing the cough reflex through sensory nerve desensitization in the airways. It is indicated for the temporary relief of cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, nasal congestion associated with the common cold, and minor aches and pains of muscles and joints, and is commonly used at bedtime to provide overnight symptomatic relief, particularly in children and adults suffering from cold and flu symptoms. Vicks VapoRub should be applied externally only and must never be taken orally, inserted into nostrils, or applied inside the mouth; it is contraindicated in children under 2 years of age, and caution is advised in patients with asthma or hypersensitivity to any of its aromatic components.
