Description
Tofranil contains Imipramine Hydrochloride, a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) that works by inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin in the central nervous system, thereby increasing the availability of these neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft and improving mood, emotional balance, and mental well-being. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), and is also widely used for childhood enuresis (bedwetting), panic disorder, and chronic pain syndromes. The drug is administered orally in tablet form, with doses typically ranging from 25mg to 300mg per day depending on the condition and patient response, usually starting at a low dose and titrating gradually. Due to its anticholinergic, antihistaminic, and alpha-adrenergic blocking properties, Tofranil may cause side effects such as dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, sedation, orthostatic hypotension, and cardiac arrhythmias, requiring caution in elderly patients and those with cardiovascular conditions.
