Lyrica (Pregabalin)

Description

Lyrica (Pregabalin) is a second-generation anticonvulsant and neuropathic pain medication belonging to the gabapentinoid class, used for the management of neuropathic pain, epilepsy, fibromyalgia, and generalized anxiety disorder. It works by binding to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, reducing the influx of calcium into hyperexcited neurons and thereby decreasing the release of excitatory neurotransmitters such as glutamate, norepinephrine, and substance P, resulting in reduced neuronal excitability and pain signaling. Commonly prescribed for diabetic peripheral neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, spinal cord injury pain, and as adjunctive therapy for partial onset seizures, it offers rapid and effective relief from chronic neuropathic pain conditions that are often difficult to manage with conventional analgesics. With its predictable linear pharmacokinetics, rapid absorption, and minimal drug interactions, Lyrica provides consistent therapeutic levels and is generally well tolerated, though dose adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment due to its primary renal elimination.
