Description
Lamictal (Lamotrigine) is a second-generation antiepileptic and mood-stabilizing medication used for the management of epilepsy and bipolar disorder in adults and children. It works by blocking voltage-sensitive sodium channels in neuronal membranes, stabilizing the neuronal membrane and inhibiting the release of excitatory neurotransmitters such as glutamate and aspartate, thereby reducing abnormal neuronal firing and preventing seizure propagation. In epilepsy, it is effective as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy for partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, absence seizures, and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, while in bipolar disorder it is particularly valued for its efficacy in preventing depressive episodes. Due to the risk of serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, particularly in children and when combined with valproate, careful dose titration with a slow escalation schedule is essential for safe and effective use of Lamotrigine therapy.
