Description
Famila Injection (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate 150mg/mL) is a long-acting injectable progestogen-only contraceptive administered as a deep intramuscular injection every 12 weeks (3 months), providing highly effective and reversible contraception with a failure rate of less than 1% with perfect use. It works primarily by suppressing ovulation through inhibition of the LH surge, while also thickening cervical mucus and causing endometrial atrophy, creating multiple barriers to pregnancy. It is particularly suitable for women who cannot use estrogen-containing contraceptives, such as those with hypertension, migraines with aura, thromboembolic risk, or who are breastfeeding. Key concerns include irregular menstrual bleeding or amenorrhea, delayed return to fertility after discontinuation (up to 12–18 months), and long-term use associated with reversible reduction in bone mineral density, requiring calcium and vitamin D supplementation in prolonged use.
