Description

Duricef/Durigef (Cefadroxil) is a first-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic that exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). It has good gram-positive coverage, particularly against Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species, with moderate activity against some gram-negative organisms such as E. coli, Klebsiella, and Proteus mirabilis. It is indicated for skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis, and is favored for its convenient once or twice daily dosing due to its prolonged half-life compared to other first-generation cephalosporins. It is generally well tolerated, with GI upset being the most common side effect, and should be used with caution in patients with penicillin hypersensitivity due to the risk of cross-reactivity.
