Description
Diovan (Valsartan) is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that works by selectively blocking the AT₁ receptor, preventing the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II. It is indicated for hypertension, heart failure (NYHA class II–IV), and post-myocardial infarction left ventricular dysfunction. Unlike ACE inhibitors, it does not cause bradykinin-mediated side effects such as dry cough, making it a preferred alternative in ACE-inhibitor-intolerant patients. It is generally well tolerated, with hyperkalemia and renal impairment being the main concerns, particularly in patients on concurrent RAS-acting agents.
